News - Mixing Business With Learning: Chaney Donation To Benefit CSM Industrial Driver Training Program

Submitted by the College of Southern Maryland

Chaney Enterprises presented the College of Southern Maryland with a new member to its commercial training fleet--a late-model concrete mixer at Chaney's Waldorf facilities.

"Combined with the donation of this mixer and the training provided by CSM, we hope to open the doors for lifelong careers of individuals as delivery professionals who can earn substantial salaries-and to live the American Dream," said Bill Childs, President and CEO of Chaney Enterprises.

"This mixer is a valuable asset to CSM's Commercial Vehicle Operator Training program and will be incorporated into the college's commercial operator driver's program as an additional career option for students," said Arlene Kirby, director of CSM's Industrial Training Department.

The mixer will be available for training beginning in January 2006. The course will highlight ready-mix truck driver duties including safety precautions, equipment inspection and maintenance procedures, product knowledge and understanding operation of product distribution maneuvers, customer service, and accident scene disposition.

Since 1962, Chaney Enterprises has manufactured and provided construction materials, supplies and customer services used throughout Maryland. Chaney has been an advocate of CSM's commercial truck driver program since its inception, providing the college with training facilities and two dump trucks. In addition to this most recent $32,000 mixer donation, Chaney is among the CSM Foundation donors.

Providing commercial operator training since 1992 with more than 1,000 graduates from the program, CSM has received recertification from the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) for its truck driver-training course that meets industry standards.
