Laurel Fork Bridge Replacement Receives Project of the Year Award
Author: Megan Joy
Chaney was recognized by the Carolinas Ready Mixed Concrete Association as the Project of the Year Award recipient for our work on the Laurel Fork Bridge Replacement along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This project paid tribute to the original 1939 bridge by blending historical preservation with modern engineering.
This bridge was constructed with precast concrete segmental design using the balanced cantilever method. In order to have control over the concrete set times, hydration stabilizers were used to have precision with each pour.
The General Manager of North Carolina, Jimmy Owen, stated “This project enhanced The Blue Ridge by taking new concrete with new ways and means and making it look like 1939. This project opened a section of the Parkway for millions of tourists traveling in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.”
This job was a success despite several major weather disruptions, including Hurricane Helene and a few ice storms. The Laurel Fork Bridge is not only stronger, but will last for future generations to come.
