News - Southern Maryland Food Bank (SMFB) Receives Support from Chaney Enterprises

Chaney Enterprises rings in the New Year by providing the Southern Maryland Food Bank with funds to get their food distribution system off to a good start. The money given will provide families living in the Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s Counties with 8,333 pounds of food, which will feed 333 people for 3 days.

The Southern Maryland Food Bank (SMFB) is a program of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. They opened their doors in 1983 to fill the needs of non-profit agencies in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s Counties. The distribution has increased by 75,000 pounds of food in 1983 to 282,000 pounds in 2000, a value of over $470,940! Just last year, the Food Bank provided food for 11,280 families in the tri-county area. Unfortunately, the need for food in these counties continues to rise. The Food Bank expects to see this demand escalate by 7 to 10 % this fiscal year.

Chaney Enterprises was eager to help the Food Bank due to both organizations’ mission to provide a better quality of life to the people in the Southern Maryland area. Together The Southern Maryland Food Bank and Chaney Enterprises fulfill this mission by providing food, one of the basic needs for survival, to area non-profit agencies that feed the needy, the ill, and children.
