News - Chaney Celebrates 35 Years in Business

From its humble beginnings to its current success, Chaney Enterprises has never forgotten the people who live in the communities it serves--best expressed in its motto, “Neighbors Serving Neighbors.”

Eugene “Babe” Chaney, Sr. began business with one dump truck, delivering material for road construction. In 1962, he and his eldest son Richard delivered their first yard of concrete under the name Charles Country Concrete Company. Just five short years later, Mr. Chaney, Sr. succumbed to throat cancer. Richard, a hands-on type of businessman, steadily brought the business forward, expanding markets and increasing the products line. In 1990, Mr. Chaney’s youngest son Frank joined the firm, bringing with him his management expertise. The match was perfect, and the company has grown into one that serves Charles, Calvert, St. Mary’s, Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties, with 11 ready mix concrete plants, 6 sand and gravel facilities, 2 automated concrete block production plants, a 19,000 square foot “One Stop Shop” concrete construction supply store, over 250 pieces of construction equipment and more than 400 employees. On a daily basis, Chaney produces over 2,000 cubic yards of ready mixed concrete, processes over 8,000 tons of sand and gravel, produces an average of 25,000 concrete blocks, and inventories over 3,000 different construction products at The Concrete Store.

Frank Chaney states that the company’s employees are its most important asset and notes that, “A better educated employee is a key to our continued growth and improvement.” For that reason, Chaney Enterprises has supported continuous training for every employee, and has developed partnerships with a number of local elementary schools and the Charles County Community College to ensure a better education and brighter future for the work force of the future.

In addition to children and education, Chaney Enterprises also supports many other charitable organizations, with a major emphasis on those that benefit health and medical facilities. Through its annual Bull Roast, the company has raised over $440,000.00 to benefit the American Cancer Society, which has honored Chaney as Maryland’s largest single one-day event contributor on a continual basis since 1980. For its support of the National MS Society, Chaney was named “Local Company of the Year” and was recently recognized by the Charles County Chamber of Commerce as the “1996 Business of the Year.”

Richard and Frank Chaney take great pride in their company, their employees, their products and communities. With the continued support of their customers, the education of their employees, and the commitment to continuing the tradition of ever-increasing excellence set by Mr. Chaney, Sr., Chaney Enterprises looks forward to being a leader in the construction industry for a least the next 35 years.
